EDC Fidget Glossary

A practical reference for the terms used across modern EDC fidgets—from form factors and movement architecture to mechanisms, feedback, materials, tuning and enthusiast language.

REFERENCE

Terms are separated by what they describe: form, architecture, mechanism, feedback, play style, components, materials and community language.

EXAMPLE

“Free-floating magnetic 3-click slider” can be a valid description because each term describes a different layer of the same product.

2-Click

A feedback configuration with two distinct tactile positions or events across the relevant movement cycle. It describes feedback structure—not architecture or mechanism.

3-Click

A feedback configuration with three distinct tactile positions or events across the relevant movement cycle. A 3-click slider can still be guided, free-floating, magnetic, mechanical or hybrid.

A

Acoustics

The audible side of a fidget interaction: click, clack, clunk, ping, ring, resonance and overall sound level. Acoustic feedback should be described separately from tactile feel.

Architecture

The movement structure that determines how a fidget or its parts are allowed to move. Examples include guided, free-floating, rotational, rocking and rolling architectures.

Axle / Shaft

A component that supports or defines rotation around an axis. An axle can be part of a spinner, roller, rotor or other rotational assembly.

B

Ball / Bead

A contact element used in some mechanical feedback systems. It can be spring-loaded and moved across a groove or track to create repeated tactile events.

Bearing

A rotational component that supports relative motion while reducing friction. Bearings are common in spinners and can also appear in rings, rollers and other mechanisms.

C

Click

A distinct tactile and/or acoustic event during interaction. “Click” describes the perceived event and does not identify the mechanism that created it.

Clicker

A compact fidget form built primarily around repeated pressing, clicking or actuation. The underlying mechanism can be magnetic, mechanical, switch-based or another system.

Clack

An acoustic descriptor for a relatively sharp contact sound. It is subjective and depends on material, geometry, contact surfaces and assembly.

Clunk / Clunky

A subjective term for a heavier, lower or more substantial contact event, whether tactile, acoustic or both. It is not a standardized measurement.

Compound Motion

Movement in which more than one motion mode contributes to the interaction, such as translation combined with rotation, pivoting or linkage-driven movement.

Contact Coin

An adjacent manipulation object handled through rubbing, rolling, flipping or whole-object movement. It should not automatically be classified as a haptic coin.

Contact Interface

The pair of surfaces that actually touch, slide, roll or engage during operation. The contact interface may use different materials from the visible body.

Continuous Feedback

Feedback that changes through movement without resolving into a small number of dominant discrete click positions.

Crunchy

A subjective enthusiast term for textured, closely repeated or granular-feeling tactile feedback. It is useful descriptive language, not a standardized engineering unit.

D

Dense / Super-Dense

Enthusiast or market language generally used for closely spaced or highly frequent tactile feedback. The terms do not have a universal technical threshold.

Detent

A positioning or feedback principle that encourages a mechanism to settle into distinct positions. A detent is not necessarily one specific component; it may be created by balls, springs, grooves, magnets or other structures.

F

Fancy Play

A play style involving more advanced manipulation, transitions, tricks or re-capture patterns. Fancy Play is not an architecture and is not synonymous with free-floating.

Feedback Configuration

The arrangement of tactile positions or events in an interaction. Common descriptions include 2-click, 3-click, multi-click, continuous and variable/tunable feedback.

Feel / Feedback Character

The perceived tactile character of a fidget, described with terms such as smooth, crisp, soft, hard, crunchy, snappy, clunky or rumbly. Many of these terms are subjective.

Fidget Ring

A ring-shaped EDC fidget built around repeatable finger-driven movement or tactile interaction. Ring describes the form; the mechanism can vary.

Fidget Roller

A handheld EDC fidget whose primary interaction involves repeated rolling or finger-driven rotation. It is not automatically the same as a knuckle roller or knucklebone.

Fidget Slider

A handheld EDC fidget whose primary interaction is repeated relative sliding movement between one or more moving components.

Fidget Spinner

A handheld EDC fidget whose primary interaction is repeated or continuous rotation around one or more axes.

Finish

How a material's surface has been processed, textured, colored or protected. Examples include polished, brushed, blasted, stonewashed, anodized, blackened and coated.

Flow Play

A play style based on linking movements into continuous transitions rather than resetting after each action. It is distinct from architecture.

Free-Floating / FFS

A slider architecture that permits substantially greater relative movement between its main sections, including offset, angled movement, rotation or multi-directional transitions.

Friction / Compression

A mechanism family in which resistance is created primarily through friction, compression, preload or deformable contact rather than discrete magnetic or ratchet events.

G

Gear

A toothed component used to transfer motion through meshing engagement. Gear systems can link rotations or create more complex mechanical interactions.

Glide

A feel descriptor for smooth, continuous sliding behavior with relatively little interruption from discrete tactile events.

Guided / Constrained

An architecture in which movement follows a defined or constrained path, producing predictable travel with limited degrees of freedom.

H

Haptic

An umbrella term relating to tactile feedback or touch-based experience. “Haptic” does not identify one specific mechanism and does not automatically mean magnetic.

Haptic Coin

A compact, usually coin- or disc-shaped EDC fidget designed around repeated structured tactile interaction. It can use magnetic, mechanical, ratchet or hybrid systems.

Hybrid

A mechanism classification in which two or more systems meaningfully contribute to the core tactile or motion experience. Simply containing multiple technologies is not enough.

I

Indexed Movement

Movement through distinct positions or steps. Indexing can be created by magnets, mechanical contact or a true ratchet; the movement characteristic alone does not reveal the mechanism.

Infinite Position / Unlimited Position

Non-standardized market or community terminology often used for designs with many possible movement or resting positions. These terms often overlap with free-floating sliders but are not automatically synonymous with FFS.

K

Knuckle Roller / Knucklebone

An adjacent manipulation or skill-toy form typically moved around, between or across the fingers. It should not automatically be treated as the same category as a conventional fidget roller.

L

Liner

A layer or component placed between working surfaces to alter friction, wear, spacing or damping. A liner may be polymeric or made from another suitable material.

M

Magnetic

A mechanism classification used when magnets meaningfully create the primary positioning, resistance, snap or return behavior. Merely containing magnets is not enough.

Material

What a part is made from, such as stainless steel, titanium, zirconium, PEI or PEEK. Material influences experience together with geometry, mechanism, finish and tuning.

Mechanical Contact

A mechanism family in which primary tactile feedback is created through physical contact between components such as springs, balls, beads, tracks, grooves, cams or stops.

Multi-Function

A product category for fidgets that combine two or more primary interaction modes, such as sliding and spinning. Multi-Function is not the same as Hybrid mechanism.

Multi-Click

A feedback configuration with several repeated discrete tactile events rather than only two or three dominant positions.

P

Patina

A surface change that develops over time through oxidation, handling or environmental exposure. Copper and brass commonly develop visible patina.

PEEK

Polyether ether ketone, a high-performance engineering polymer used in some EDC components, wear interfaces and structural parts.

PEI

Polyetherimide, a rigid engineering thermoplastic used in some EDC bodies, plates, inserts and contact components.

Play Style

How a person interacts with a fidget, such as standard repetitive play, tactile play, flow play, fancy play, one-handed manipulation or two-handed manipulation.

Preload

Force or compression already applied to a spring, contact element or assembly before the main movement begins. Preload can strongly change resistance and feedback.

PTFE

Polytetrafluoroethylene, a very low-friction polymer often used as a film, liner, sticker or contact surface rather than as the main structural body.

R

Ratchet

A mechanical system that creates repeated indexed engagement through shaped mechanical elements, commonly involving teeth and a pawl or similar contact structure.

Ratcheting Feel

A stepped or indexed sensation that resembles a ratchet. Ratcheting feel does not prove that a true mechanical ratchet is present; magnets or other indexing systems can feel similar.

Re-Capture

Bringing a displaced or rotated moving section back into a controlled, usable relationship with the rest of the fidget, especially during free-floating manipulation.

Resonance

Sustained or emphasized vibration that contributes to audible or tactile character. Resonance depends on the entire structure, not only on material.

Rocker

A fidget form or interaction built around repeated pivoting or seesaw-like motion around a constrained point or axis.

Rotor

A rotating component within a mechanism. Rotors may support continuous rotation, eccentric movement or linked motion depending on the design.

S

Snap / Snappy

A feel descriptor for a distinct, quick transition into or out of a tactile position. It is often associated with magnetic systems but is not limited to them.

Spring

An elastic component that stores and returns energy. Springs can provide preload, return force or contact pressure in mechanical feedback systems.

T

Tuning

The adjustment or selection of variables that change how a mechanism behaves, including resistance, positioning, feedback, sound and movement. Tuning is not the same as mechanism.

W

Wear Plate

A dedicated contact component designed to take sliding or rubbing wear instead of the primary body. Wear plates may also be used to tune friction and surface feel.

Market names are useful clues, but technical classification should follow verified movement, mechanism, components and materials rather than naming alone.
